Under the Radar: Daryl Hannah Reflects on the Groundbreaking Female Ensemble of Steel Magnolias 35 Years Later

When Steel Magnolias debuted 35 years ago, it quickly became a cinematic classic, celebrated for its heartfelt portrayal of friendship, resilience, and small-town Southern life. But as Daryl Hannah reflects, the film was also groundbreaking for its all-star cast, featuring predominantly women—a rarity in Hollywood at the time.

“It was the first time I'd ever really experienced women,” says Hannah, now 63, of working alongside Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, and the late Olympia Dukakis. “Everyone talks about, now, ‘Women supporting women!’ Well, in my day, it was not like that.”

Based on Robert Harling’s play of the same name, Steel Magnolias was inspired by the writer’s own experience of losing his sister to complications from diabetes. The adaptation, directed by Herbert Ross, struck a chord with audiences for its depiction of close-knit female friendships, humor, and tragedy. The movie’s ensemble cast delivered powerhouse performances, with Sally Field’s emotional portrayal of a grieving mother and Julia Roberts’ breakout role as Shelby earning critical acclaim.

The production wasn’t without its challenges. Herbert Ross reportedly pushed the cast hard, which some actors have described as a demanding experience. However, the chemistry between the actresses on screen became the heart of the film, solidifying its place as a cultural touchstone. The movie grossed over $95 million worldwide and continues to resonate with fans decades later.

Hannah’s reflections underscore the unique camaraderie that emerged during filming, paving the way for conversations about female representation and collaboration in Hollywood. In an era when male-dominated casts were the norm, Steel Magnolias proved that a film centered on women’s stories could achieve both commercial success and lasting emotional impact.
