‘Suits’ Creator Assures Fans Suits LA Spinoff Won’t Tarnish the Original: ‘Not Trying to Replace It’

Aaron Korsh, creator of the hit legal drama Suits, is addressing fan concerns about the upcoming spinoff, Suits LA, and its potential impact on the legacy of the original show.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, January 26, Korsh responded to viewers worried that the new series might undermine the beloved Suits. “Not trying to replace our beloved originals. Just a new crew working in a different city handling different kinds of cases,” Korsh, 58, wrote. In a follow-up post, he acknowledged fans’ reservations, saying, “It seems like people are all wishing it was the originals back. I expected this and can’t blame them. I can only hope they give #SuitsLA is an open-minded try. If they do, I really believe they will grow to love it.”

Korsh emphasized that Suits LA is “100% its own thing,” though he teased “some overlap” with the original series. When asked about potential cameos from original cast members like Gabriel Macht (Harvey Specter), Patrick J. Adams (Mike Ross), or Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen), Korsh left the door open. “It remains to be seen,” he said, adding that his focus is on establishing the new characters. However, he hinted at Harvey Specter’s presence, noting that the network was eager to include at least one original cast member.

Background on the Original Series

Suits, which aired from 2011 to 2019 on USA Network, was set in a high-powered New York City law firm. It followed the story of associate lawyer Mike Ross (Adams), who, despite never attending law school, worked alongside the sharp and charismatic Harvey Specter (Macht). The show delved into the duo’s efforts to win cases while keeping Mike’s secret under wraps. The series, known for its witty dialogue and strong character dynamics, was a major success and brought global fame to its cast, including Meghan Markle, who played paralegal Rachel Zane.

The series experienced a major resurgence in popularity in 2023 when it was added to Netflix and Peacock, becoming one of the most-streamed shows of the year. Its renewed relevance prompted NBC to greenlight Suits LA, starring Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg.

What to Expect from Suits LA

Suits LA shifts the action from New York to Los Angeles, focusing on a new group of lawyers at the fictional Black Lane Law group. Stephen Amell, who plays Ted Black, shared his excitement about the series in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, crediting the original Suits cast for paving the way. “We are only here because of Gabriel [Macht], Patrick [J. Adams], Sarah [Rafferty], Meghan [Markle], and the rest of the original cast. All of them are welcome [to make appearances],” he said.

Amell teased that his character has a connection to Harvey Specter, revealing a photo of a young Ted Black with a young Harvey prominently displayed behind his desk. “We came up together in the D.A. 's office,” he explained, hinting at the possibility of Macht reprising his iconic role.

While Korsh and the Suits LA team are eager to make the new series a success, they also want to honor the legacy of the original show. “We’re going to do our own thing, and that’s OK,” Amell added. “But all of them are welcome to join us anytime.”

As Suits LA prepares to premiere later this year, fans of the original series will be watching closely to see if the new crew can live up to the high bar set by Harvey, Mike, and the rest of the Suits family.
