Inside Keri Russell's Private Life as Mom of Three

Keri Russell may be known for her acclaimed roles in Felicity, The Americans, and The Diplomat, but at home, her most cherished role is being a mom to her three children: River, Willa, and Sam.
The Golden Globe-winning actress shares her two older children, River and Willa, with her ex-husband Shane Deary, whom she married in 2007. The couple welcomed River later that same year and Willa in 2012. In 2013, Russell and Deary separated, and by 2014, Russell began dating her The Americans co-star Matthew Rhys. Together, the couple welcomed their son Sam in 2016.
Russell, 47, has embraced motherhood alongside her illustrious career, often marveling at the unique personalities of her children. “I think it’s just different [based on] the kid. You never know,” she told PEOPLE in 2017. “You get what you get, and they’re all so different and wild and weird and good in their own way.”
The Waitress and Cocaine Bear actress has been in the spotlight since the 1990s, when she gained widespread fame as the title character in the WB’s Felicity. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Jennings on The Americans earned her critical acclaim, including multiple Emmy nominations. Despite her busy acting schedule, Russell has always prioritized creating a loving, supportive environment for her children.
One of her core parenting philosophies is teaching her kids to be kind and loyal. “Don’t be a jerk,” she said simply. “As they get older, [the lessons are] being a good friend, being a loyal friend, and don’t talk about your friend.”
Russell also acknowledges the ups and downs of parenting and emphasizes giving herself grace in difficult moments. “You do the best you can every single day, and some days are bad days,” she said. “I feel like people need to remember that more.”
Whether it’s adjusting her parenting style to suit each child’s personality or fostering a respectful community around them, Russell’s approach to motherhood is grounded in love, patience, and understanding. For River, Willa, and Sam, she’s not just a Hollywood star — she’s the mom who’s there to guide them through life’s challenges and joys.
