John Stamos Reveals He Once Auditioned to Play the Grinch but Was Allergic to Prosthetics

John Stamos nearly took on a much grinchier role during his career. The Full House star, 61, shared on the December 23 episode of the ’Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast that he auditioned to play the titular role in the 2000 holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Stamos explained that during a makeup test for the role, he discovered he was allergic to the prosthetics, forcing him to bow out of the opportunity. The part ultimately went to Jim Carrey, whose performance earned a Golden Globe nomination and critical acclaim.
“Hey, you know, I have something. Here’s an interesting fact you don’t know about me,” Stamos told the podcast’s host, James Austin Johnson, who played the Grinch character.
“Shoot,” replied the Grinch.
“I was originally going to play you in the movie that Jim Carrey got,” Stamos revealed. “Did you know that? I went to the makeup test.”
As the Grinch reacted in surprise, Stamos added, “And I was allergic to the, you know, all the prosthetics.”
Stamos also asked the Grinch character what he thought of Carrey’s performance. The Grinch replied playfully, “They brought me in a couple days to do some consulting. It was a little eerie walking around the set when they built an exact replica of my neighborhood. Triggering, but they did okay.”
The Ron Howard-directed film, based on Dr. Seuss’ 1957 children’s book, became a box office hit and won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The movie also featured performances by Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, and Christine Baranski, cementing its place as a holiday favorite.
Stamos, best known for his role as Uncle Jesse on Full House and its reboot Fuller House, has enjoyed a diverse career spanning decades. In addition to his work on television, he has appeared in movies, starred on Broadway, and toured as a musician. Stamos is also an Emmy-nominated producer, showcasing his talents behind the scenes. While he missed out on playing the Grinch, his revelation adds an interesting twist to his storied career. Fans can only imagine how the beloved actor would have brought his charm and charisma to Whoville!
