Kathy Bates Reacts to 2025 Golden Globes Loss with Humor: ‘I’d Vote for Her Too,’ Says Winner Anna Sawai

Kathy Bates turned her 2025 Golden Globes loss into a moment of pure comedy.

The 76-year-old actress, nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series—Drama for her role in Matlock, had the audience laughing after Shogun’s Anna Sawai was announced as the winner during the January 5 ceremony.

As Sawai’s name was called, Bates was seen clapping enthusiastically before dramatically ripping up a piece of paper—presumably her acceptance speech—and tossing it over her shoulder. The Oscar winner then continued to cheerfully applaud as the 32-year-old actress made her way to the stage to accept her first Golden Globe.

Bates’ playful reaction was matched by fellow nominee Keri Russell (The Diplomat), who jokingly pretended her name was called, clapping while mouthing, “Thank you, thank you,” before sharing a laugh with her tablemates. Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), and Keira Knightley (Black Doves) also joined in congratulating Sawai, who later gave a heartfelt shoutout to Bates during her acceptance speech.

“I have so much to thank, but I’ll keep it short,” Sawai said on stage. “Thank you to the voters for voting for me—even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day.”

Kathy Bates has had a storied career spanning more than five decades, making her a beloved figure in Hollywood. She first rose to fame with her chilling performance as Annie Wilkes in the 1990 thriller Misery, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Bates’ versatility has been showcased across genres, from her Emmy-winning roles in American Horror Story to comedic turns in films like Primary Colors and About Schmidt.
